EGU Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal 2006
The German scientist Erich Roeckner has won the prestigious EGU Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal for his eminent contributions to the fields of atmospheric and oceanic modelling and process studies, and his outstanding leadership role in the development of a series of Earth climate system models.
This medal has been established by the Division on Atmospheric Sciences in recognition of the scientific achievements of Vilhelm Bjerknes. It is reserved for distinguished research in atmospheric sciences.
Erich Roeckner is a Senior Scientist at the Max Plancke Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg.
Resumé
Among the leading climate modeling centers of today no informed person would exclude the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg, due to the most eminent stature of its series of ECHAM atmospheric general circulation, and more recently Earth climate system models. That this has happened is of course mainly a result of the contributions of its outstanding scientists. Among them was, and is, Erich Roeckner, the single most important person to develop the key tools at MPI-M needed to perform cutting-edge climate research, and also use them to improve our understanding of the Earth climate system. Medal Lecture Erich Roeckner will accept his medal and give his Medal lecture during the EGU General Assembly, to be held in Vienna, Austria from 2 – 7 April 2006. The lecture 'Climate response to aerosol forcing’starts starts at 19.00 h, Tuesday, 4 April 2006, Lecture Room 23.
