Beno Gutenberg Medal 2006
The Dutch scientist Guust Nolet has won the prestigious EGU Beno Gutenberg Medal for his pioneering role in the development of digital broadband seismology and for his outstanding contributions to geophysical inverse theory and seismic tomography, which have revolutionized our understanding of the structure of the Earth's interior.
The Beno Gutenberg Medal has been established by the Division on Seismology in recognition of the scientific achievements of Beno Gutenberg. It is reserved for individuals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Seismology. Guust Nolet is Professor of Geosciences (Seismology) at the Princeton University in the USA. Resumé Guust Nolet has spent much of his distinguished scientific career seeking to understand the mantle's role in shaping the geological features observed at Earth's surface. A quasi-chronological overview of his work can be seen here , and illustrates not only his research creativity and versatility but also his tremendous success as mentor for a new generation of seismologists. Medal Lecture Professor Nolet will accept his medal and give his Medal lecture during the EGU General Assembly, to be held in Vienna, Austria from 2 – 7 April 2006. The lecture ‘Finite-frequency tomography, mantle plumes, and the terrestrial heat budget’ starts Wednesday, 5 April at 11:15 h in Lecture Room 6 (K).
